Undercover Kids Programme

New Zealand’s leading supplier of steel sheds and buildings has launched a major programme to protect our children as they wait for buses school routes. The Undercover Kids Programme is a nationwide initiative and Totalspan’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to the communities in which they do business.

Undercover Kids is a nationwide, long-term initiative, which has already seen 194 bus shelters allocated to schools and communities across the country. In 2010 we are providing a further 100 bus shelters for school bus routes throughout the country to help keep our children safe.

PTA Fundraising

The PTA are busy getting organised for their next fundraising venture - Cheese Rolls. Next week each family will receive an order form in the mail. Please make an effort to get lots of orders. The cheese rolls will be made during the weekend starting after 3pm on Friday 25 June and through Saturday 26 June. At the bottom of the order form you are asked to tick a time when you would be available to help. Please make an effort to become involved as money raised in these fundraising initiatives goes directly into providing extras that make each sudents school and learning experience enhanced.

Following is some of the items purchased for the students use through the funding from the PTA: 4 square courts, concrete and seating, library furniture, sun shading blinds for the science laboratories and drapes for other classrooms, equipment and furniture for the year 13 common room, graphics calculators for the mathematics department, a file server, plants and landscaping, data projectors, canteen chairs and a basketball 4 way hoop in the quad area.

Orders along with the money are to be into the school office by Friday 18 June.

Weightlifting

Congratulations to Ashleigh MacDougall, year 11, who participated in Fiji for weightlifting from 2 - 8 May. Ashleigh achieved 6th in the 69+ youth division and 4th in the 75+ junior division. Well done.

Trinity Music Award

Congratulations to our Year 13 student Patrick Wilkes who is being gowned and capped tonight i.e. 20 May in Dunedin on achieving a Diploma of Music ATCL with distinction from the Trinity College of Music in England. Patrick is one of two student's from Verdon College who have received this prestigious award.

NZ Taekwondo Open 2010

Congratulations to Sam Short and Rhys Dunn who participated in the New Zealand Taekwondo Open in Auckland from April 17 - 18.
Sam achieved a gold medal in the under 65kg and Rhys achieved a silver medal in the under 68kg. Well done.

Netball

Protocols and Information Night

When: Monday 26 April 2010 - 7pm
Venue: Stadium Southland Corp room 4/5

This is an evening designed for to reinforce INC protocols and to ensure all teams are made aware of their responsibilities before netball commences for 2010. It will cover a wide range of topics.

It is compulsory for every secondary school grade team and Year 7/8 grade team to have at least one representative present.

One person cannot represent more than one team.

Failure to attend Protocols Night will result in your team losing 4 competition points.

Paigan Marshall has been selected in the Southland Cycling team to complete in the National Road Cycling Championships at the end of April / start of May.

Josh Watson was placed second in the Novice Individual Duathlon.

Terry Thurlow was placed fifth in the Year 7 & 8 Individual Duathlon.

Tim and Conor O'Neill won the Year 7 & 8 Team Duathlon.

Well done to the Verdon contingent who competed with credit at the Southland Junior Schools Swimming Championships held on Sunday 28 March at Splash Palace. Outstanding performances were achieved by two year 7's - Liam Cullen and Olivia Thornbury who dominated the boys and girls 11 year old age group.

Speedway Winner

Congratulations to Hayden Sims for winning the Southland Championship in the 200cc Solo Speedway bike in the junior class over the weekend. Hayden also came second at the beginning of March at the Canterbury Junior Championship.

After breaking a hand at the beginning of the season, he has finished off on a high note by winning the last three meetings held at Oreti Park Speedway - including taking maximum points at the two previous meetings before the weekend. Well done Hayden.

Radio Southland Open Day

Radio Southland are holding an open day on 9 April from 9.30a.m. - 4 p.m. If you are interested in broadcasting please see Mrs More at the Careers Office.

Athletics Sports Day

This is now scheduled for Thursday 4 March 2010. If the day is cancelled due to wet weather, it will be on all the radio students at 7 a.m. on Thursday morning. Students meet at Surrey Park at 9 a.m. and the day finishes at 3 p.m. sharp. The following applies to bus students:

City Buses will pick up and drop off at Surrey Park i.e. Waikiwi, Windsor, Clarendon and Clifden.

Country Buses - Al buses that leave from the Hargest Junior Campus, the Bluff bus and the Otatara bus will pick up and drop off at Surrey Park.
If your bus drops off and leaves from Onslow Street - there will be a bus to take students from Onslow Street to Surrey Park and back. This bus will leave Surrey Park at 3.05 p.m. sharp.

Despite not having a University in Invercargill, Southland has the privilege of hosting the University Games 2010.

The UniGames are famous for providing a friendly, yet competitive environment for everyone who is involved. This atmosphere has developed the UniGames into NZ’s premier University Sports Event.

With 15 Tertiary Institutions involved, 1200-1500 competitors, and 24 sports, we need your help!

Volunteers are the backbone of the Uni Games and are extremely important to ensure this event can take place in a safe and efficient manner. It is our aim to create a positive, rewarding and enjoyable experience for all volunteers involved.

Giving the athletes and their teams a real Southland experience through enthusiastic volunteers from the Southland community will be critical to its success.

You may want to count this toward your Duke of Edinburgh, Champagnat service award or you may just simply want to be involved!

Show Jumping Success

Jessica Fahey has been in Christchurch competing at the New Zealand Show Jumping Championships. Jessica was placed 2nd in the 1.10 class and 6th in the 1 metre class.
The classes were large with the average of 35 competitors in Jessica's classes.
Unfortunately Jess horse had to be put down on Sat evening after suffering a bleed to the brain.

Informatics Success

Congratulations to Matt Lough who attended the New Zealand Olympiad in Informatics held at Auckland University during the holidays. Matt is training and hopes to be selected for the Olympiad which will be held in Toronto, Canada in August. We wish him every success.
